RESEARCH INTERESTS

Our research activities aim to identify genetic and environmental contributions to common major malformations, including gene-environment interactions.  We use epidemiological approaches to investigate causes of common birth defects and other adverse perinatal outcomes.  Our research has especially focused on assessing maternal nutritional intakes during pregnancy and risks for delivering infants with various major malformations– many of these investigations have included genotyping of infant and maternal genetic variants of genes involved in one-carbon metabolism (folate and choline-related genes) or xenobiotic metabolism.
