Dr. Ames is a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of California at Berkeley (UCB), and a former director of UCB's National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Center. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and served on the NAS Commission on Life Sciences. He was presidentially appointed to serve on the National Medal of Science Committee from 2003 to 2007. He was a member of the board of directors of the National Cancer Institute (National Cancer Advisory Board) from 1976 to 1982.
