Breaking Down Barriers
Minority Training Opportunities at CHORI

Demographic projections suggest that by 2020, African Americans and Hispanic Americans will make up 30 percent of California’s population. Unless present trends in minority students’ pursuit of biomedical careers are altered, however, less than 5 percent of those entering science professions will come from these two minority groups.

CHORI hopes to reverse this trend through offering the opportunity for minority students to participate in CHORI's Summer Research Program. Giving minority students the opportunity to explore research through internships is not unique to CHORI. What makes CHORI's program special is that it specifically targets students who otherwise might not have the opportunity to experience research first-hand, either because they have ‘average’ academic records and are less likely to be competitive in spite of budding interest, or because they face significant socioeconomic barriers.

By funding research opportunities for minority students like the Summer Research Program, CHORI strives to help break down barriers, ensuring better access to medical services in underserved populations and nurturing role models who might inspire others to pursue biomedical careers.
