Project Staff

Health and Biomedical Science for a Diverse Community was made possible by the efforts of dozens of individuals working together:

Bertram H. Lubin, MD, President and CEO, CHRCO,
Dr. Lubin, currently President and CEO of Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland, has worked with children, their families, and their healthcare providers in the Bay Area community for more than 30 years. Previously, as Director of Medical Research, he was responsible for providing leadership to all research activities in the medical center, similar to a Dean of Research. Dr. Lubin is a pediatrician whose area of expertise is the treatment of hemoglobinopathies, including sickle cell anemia and thalassemia. He is the PI of the satellite Pediatric Clinical Research Center at CHORI and the Co-PI of the Center of Excellence in Nutritional Genomics supported by the National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities. He was also the PI of the NHLBI Short-Term Training for Minority Students for 15 years. Dr. Lubin is one of the editors of Management and Therapy of Sickle Cell Disease (Third Edition 1995), an NIH publication widely accepted as the standard of care for patients. He is also the co-founder and director of the Related Donor Cord Blood Program, a nationwide program based at CHRCO. He has been invited to serve on advisory committees for the National Institutes of Health, the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, the State of California Genetic Disease Program, and the American Red Cross, and he is the author of more than two hundred publications in the field of hematology.

Lucille L. Day, PhD, Visiting Scientist, CHORI, and Former Director, Hall of Health,
Dr. Day has been involved in math and science education for more than 30 years as a teacher, curriculum specialist, consultant in public education and curriculum development, writer/editor, and program administrator. As Director of CHRCO’s Hall of Health Museum for 17 years, she developed, conducted, and evaluated programs in health and human biology for school classes, teachers, and the public. She also spearheaded and oversaw development of exhibits on cell biology and cancer prevention, neurobiology, the heart and circulatory system, safety, health and the environment, and social and genetic factors in health. Her experience in health and science education includes teaching 4th-9th grade science at an alternative school, serving as a math/science specialist in a public school district, teaching chemistry and biology at a community college, managing the Pre-college Education Programs at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and lecturing in health education at UC Berkeley and Saint Mary's College of California. As an education consultant, she has developed and presented teacher in-service workshops in math and science, developed curricula for the California Department of Education, served as the science education advisor to the developers of Women in Science, a multimedia, CD-ROM computer program, and co-authored How to Encourage Girls in Math and Science: Strategies for Parents and Educators (Dale Seymour).
