Elizabeth Theil, Senior Scientist, Receives Science Career Achievement Award at Medical Staff Annual Dinner Meeting (MARCH 2003)

(March 26, 2003) Elizabeth Theil, Ph.D. was presented with the "Science Career Achievement Award" for her work in ferritin structure/function and genetic regulation in development, nutrition and medicine. She received the award at the Medical Staff Annual Dinner Meeting held at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley, California.

The Science Career Achievement Award was established in 1999 by Dr. Elliott Vichinsky and Dr. Bertram H. Lubin. The nominating committee consists of four clinical and four basic science Senior Scientists. After reviewing research articles written by the candidates, they nominate a scienitist whom they consider has made the most important discovery of the year.

Dr. Theil, Senior Scientist, joined CHORI in 1998 and is currently Associate Director of the Hematology Training Program and Center Leader of the BioIron Center. Her work in both iron research and science education garnered her the Max Gardner Award from the University of North Carolina for Service to Humanity. She also was one of twelve from 1,400 Faculty members and the first woman to hold an endowed Chair in the history of North Carolina State University.

Dr. Theil has chaired or served on many national and international committees for the NIH and in Biological Chemistry/Molecular Biology, Chemistry and Bioinorganic Chemistry, with particular emphasis on interdisciplinary research and training. She is the recipient of NIH grant awards since 1971, including the NIH Merit Award.
