Dr. Elizabeth Theil, Senior Scientist, celebrates her five-year anniversary at CHORI

Dr. Theil was attracted to CHORI in 1998, from a Chaired Professorship at North Carolina State University, by Sickle Cell Anemia and Thalassemia research and clinics at CHRCO and by mouse models for the diseases at CHORI that gave her the opportunity to focus on both the molecular and clinical properties of iron in biology, health and disease. To facilitate interactions at the clinical/basic science interface, she founded the Center for BioIron at CHORI, drawing together scientists and clinicians from CHORI, CHO, UC-Berkeley, UC-Davis, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Louisville. One workshop has been held, a second is planned and four new grants have been funded as a result of the interactions.

Accomplishments of the Theil Molecular BioIron Lab at CHORI during the last five years include: direct NIH funds more than doubled; 29 Papers published, 3 as cover articles; 2 invention disclosures and one patent filed; 15 students and fellows trained (2 BS, 1 MS, 1 PH.D. and 11 postdoctoral ) for careers in academe, government labs and the biotech industry.
