Honoring a Pioneer in Lipid Research
CHORI Scientist Gives Keynote Address

November 3-5, 2011 – At this year’s World Congress on Insulin Resistance, Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease, CHORI Senior Scientist Ronald Krauss, MD, will be receiving the Distinguished Leader in Insulin Resistance Award and giving a corresponding keynote address.  The international conference brings together a mix of both researchers and clinicians from across the globe who are involved with insulin resistance and its complications.

“It’s an honor to be receiving this, especially because those in attendance are my colleagues and peers.”

As a pioneer of lipid research who has helped define the major lipid disorder associated with insulin resistance, called atherogenic dyslipidemia, Dr. Krauss was a fitting choice to receive the award.

“It’s an honor to be receiving this, especially because those in attendance are my colleagues and peers, as well as clinicians who actually put some of this research into practice,” says Dr. Krauss.

Dr. Krauss will be lecturing on atherogenic dyslipidemia, which involves a set of interrelated changes in lipoprotein metabolism, and its pathophysiology.

“The talk will address our understanding of the basis for the production of this lipid trait, and will then focus on its implications for cardiovascular disease risk in particular,” says Dr. Krauss, whose research in this area has elucidated the causes and underlying mechanisms of atherogenic dyslipidemia.

In addition, Dr. Krauss will conclude with a discussion of the scientific evidence for the connection between atherogenic dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease risk, as well as dietary and pharmaceutical approaches to the management of the lipid trait, and their corresponding challenges.

“This is a particularly satisfying award, as this conference serves as an interface between the science and its application to medical care and public health, which is really at the heart of much of my research,” says Dr. Krauss.
