The Next 50 Years
CHORI Celebrates 50th Anniversary with March Research Symposium

Now an Oakland landmark in the beautifully restored University High School Building at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza, Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute, once comprised of a mere handful of scientists, has emerged as a jewel of Children’s Hospital – and a vision of what research, at its best, can truly be.

CHORI invites you to join us on Wednesday March 31, 2010, for a celebration of our journey from a 5-employee laboratory to a multi-million-dollar enterprise that currently ranks 5th in the nation for National Institutes of Health pediatric research funding.

"We are holding a day-long event to honor our history, showcase ongoing cutting-edge research and approach the future with strength, vigor and passion."
The CHORI 50th Anniversary Research Symposium will begin with a morning session of oral presentations by members of the CHORI Staff and Clinical Scientist and Postdoctoral Fellow Association (SPAC), designed to showcase the research progress and achievements of CHORI trainees and emerging scientists.

"CHORI has made great efforts to build an infrastructure to not only conduct cutting-edge research, but to train and educate future biomedical researchers, a role that is critical to our goal to renew and revitalize CHORI as we take the first steps toward the next 50 years of innovation and enterprise," says CHORI senior scientist, Robert Ryan, PhD.
Another important component of the Symposium is the poster presentations by SPAC members and trainees. This forum will permit one on one discussions with CHORI scientific staff, providing an insider's view of their research activities and their relationship to important biological and disease questions.

After a break for lunch / poster viewing in the library and courtyard, the Symposium will continue with presentations by 4 pre-eminent scientists who represent broad areas of research relevant to CHORI's scientific mission.

"Our goal was to invite the highest caliber speakers possible, individuals who are both currently active in research and at the top of their fields. We made an effort to select visionary scientists who are inspiring communicators capable of engaging an audience composed of both scientists and members of the community," Dr. Ryan says.

Finally, the afternoon will close out with a reception to honor those staff and researchers who have been with CHORI for 25 years or more. For all of CHORI's accomplishments, the research undertaken here is only as strong as the scientists and support staff who contribute on a daily basis. CHORI invites you to be a part of honoring the long-term efforts of those individuals who have helped make CHORI what it is today.

"The CHORI 50th Anniversary Research Symposium is envisioned as an opportunity to learn something about ongoing cutting-edge research at CHORI and how we have positioned ourselves at the forefront of biomedical research efforts that complement the mission of Children's Hospital. It is our hope that this Symposium willinfuse a new level of energy into our scientific activities as we move forward into the future," says Dr. Ryan.
