Kathleen Houtchens , PhD


Dr. Kathleen Houtchens obtained her B.S. in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the John Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii, Manoa. Dr. Houtchens has been at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland since 2001 when she accepted a position as Staff Research Scientist with Dr. Trachtenberg.

Since then she has been involved with both the research and clinical molecular laboratory (HLA/Immunogenetics, Molecular Diagnostics) sections of the Trachtenberg laboratory. Her work now intersects both the clinical laboratory and basic science research in transplantation and immunogenetics.

Since 2006, Dr. Houtchens has been integral in the development and operation of the clinical Molecular Diagnostics laboratory at CHRCO. In her dual roles as laboratory clinician and research scientist, Dr. Houtchens brings a unique perspective to the CHRCO Institutional Review Board.
