ADAPT: Biomarkers of adaptation to changes in water intakE STUDY

Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute is doing an 8 week study to find out how drinking water influences cell hydration. You may qualify to participate if you are:

• Male
• Age 19-39 years
• Healthy
• A non-smoker
• Normal weight (body mass index 18.5 - 24.9)
• Exercise less than 30 min/day
• Drink less than 1 liter or 16 ounces water each day
• Regularly drink fewer than one alcoholic or caffeinated beverage/week

In order to participate in this study, you must be able to:

• Visit the Pediatric Clinic Research Center at Children’s Hospital Oakland every Thursday morning each week for 8 weeks. These visits would last up to 2hours, but can start as early as 6am to fit your schedule.
• Drink up to 2 liters more water per day than you currently drink during four weeks of the study.
• Record what you eat and drink each day for 8 weeks.
• Have your blood drawn and your body weight, body composition, and metabolism measured once each week for 8 weeks.
• Collect all your urine over 24 hours from Thursday morning to Friday morning each week for 8 weeks.
