Thank you for your interest in the CHORI Kidney Stones Study.
For unknown reasons, the number of people in the United States with kidney stones has been increasing over the past 30 years. Each year, about 3 million people visit health care providers for kidney stone problems. The first symptom of a kidney stone is excruciating pain. Once a person develops kidney stones, other stones are likely to develop.
In people who have already developed a kidney stone, the chance or risk of developing more stones depends on urine composition, diet, activity level, medication use, and medical history. The CHORI Kidney Stones Study aims to find out what risk factors might explain the increasing number of new cases of kidney stones.
|About 800 adults on the East and West coasts will be in this study.
|Emails and/or postcards will be sent to randomly selected addresses. If you got an email or postcard invitation to participate and you are a healthy adult between 30 to 45 years old, you can be in the study. Only one adult per address can be in this study.
Study participation involves:
- Reviewing the Information Sheet and deciding to be in the study.
- Complete the Food & Drink form
- One visit to a local Quest Diagnostic clinic on a weekday morning between 8:30 and 9:30am to give a urine sample
- Returning completed form to CHORI
If you are interested in this study, we will send you the study forms and a list of local Quest Diagnostic clinics.
Any weekday (Mon-Fri) before December 15, 2010, between 8:30-9:30am, you can go to a Quest Diagnostics clinic – whichever clinic is most convenient for you. The morning of the clinic visit, you do not need to do anything special, except fill in the Food & Drink form. You can wake up, eat, drink and do whatever is normal for you on a weekday morning before 8:30am.
NOTE: Samples must be collected in the morning and cannot be collected on weekends.
|If you give a urine sample at a Quest Diagnostics clinic, you will be emailed a $80 Amazon.com Gift Card*. If you also return a completed study questionnaire, you will get an extra $20 in the Amazon.com Gift Card.
The gift card will be emailed by CHORI within 2 months of CHORI receiving the completed questionnaire and Quest Diagnostics report.
