Taking the Innovative Approach
Clinical Research in CHORI's Center for Sickle Cell Disease & Thalassemia

CHORI's Center for Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia (SCT) hosts the nationally and internationally recognized Northern California Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, one of 10 such centers nationwide, and the Thalassemia Clinical Research Network (TCRN), both of which are NIH-funded and provide the highest standard of excellence in care, research and cures in the clinical setting.

Offering unique tools for research and treatment, CHORI's SCT also hosts the internationally recognized Blood and Marrow Transplant Program (BMT), which provided the first cure of alpha thalassemia major in North America in 2000.

Since then over 40 children have received cures for various cancers and deadly blood disorders under the direction of BMT founder, Mark Walters, MD, who continues to pioneer transplant research in these diseases. His most recent focus is on transplant protocols to induce stable chimerism in sickle cell patients and novel conditioning regimen to reduce the incidence of graft rejection in the use of sibling donor chord blood in sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia.

SCT's ability to provide the opportunity for cures is uniquely enhanced by the Sibling Donor Cord Blood Program, the only not-for-profit organization of its kind in the world. In addition, CHORI's SCT houses one of only two ferritometers in the United States, a non-invasive, pain-free alternative to biopsies for measuring iron overload.

These are but a few examples of the ways in which SCT is dedicated to providing the highest quality in care while developing and evaluating treatments that offer the greatest opportunity for survival and improved of quality of life. Explore the Investigator links in the sidebar menu to discover all the ways in which CHORI's SCT is at the forefront of sickle cell and thalassemia treatment and research.
