CHORI’s Center for Cancer Research is uniquely positioned to foster the dynamic collaboration between clinicians, clinical researchers and basic scientists necessary for developing cutting-edge translational research.
A member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) – the largest cooperative pediatric clinical trials group in the nation – CHORI’s Center for Cancer clinical oncology department designs, monitors and implementats clinical and translational research aimed at improving the long term outcome of all children with malignant tumors.
The director of Children Hospital Oakland’s (CHO) nationally renowned Oncology Department, James Feusner, MD, is responsible for the major translational research efforts of The Center for Cancer Research. Since 1979, Dr. Feusner has been an active member of COG, which was created specifically to conduct clinical trials and translational research for children with cancer and represents the management of nearly 90 percent of children’s clinical cancer research in the nation. Dr. Feusner’s current research interests include hepatoblastoma in premature babies, promyelocytic leukemia and ongoing epidemiologic studies related to the incidence of brain tumors and leukemia in California children.

Director of the Children’s Hospital Oakland (CHO) Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) Clinical Laboratory and diplomat of the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI), Elizabeth Trachtenberg, PhD, investigates the roles of HLA and Natural Killer Immunoglobulin-like Receptor (KIR) complexes in stem cell transplantation outcome. Under Dr. Trachtenberg’s direction, the HLA lab is one of four laboratories in the nation that act as ASHI/CAP referees for HLA class I and class II DNA and serological tying proficiency surveys.
