Related umbilical cord blood transplant in patients with Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease 2003 Blood March 15. * This study analyzed 44 patients given allogeneic related cord blood transplantation for either thalassemia or sickle cell disease. No patient died and 36 out of 44 children remain disease-free, with a median follow-up of 24 months. At the time of submission of this manuscript 85% of the patients appeared to be cured of their disease. Four patients experienced grade II acute graft vs. host disease (GVHD); only 2 out of the 36 patients at risk developed limited chronic GVHD. Related cord blood transplants (CBT) for hemoglobinopathies offer an excellent probability of success and are associated with a low risk of GVHD. Banking of cord blood and consideration of cord blood donor transplant should be given for children with sickle cell anemia and thalessemia. 2. Reed W,
